As an interesting side note, most competitions no longer allow the use of the 1/4 wave whips because they are so dangerous to bystanders. If you show up with one, you fail the tech inspection and they send you home. I understand that some private wheeling areas and clubs are moving that way as well.

There are better solutions in this day and age

I am trying to plan out a CB install. Also got a factory spare tire carrier to mount. I was thinking of mounting the firestick on the top hinge.

Any experience or criticism of this location?

I have 30 dollars into my antenna, total. 15 for the antenna, and 15 for the quick disconnect connector, so i can run without the antenna except when wheeling.

I have tuned my antenna with an SWR meter, and i get a good mile and a half of recieving if on completely flat ground. When wheeling, i have absolutely no trouble hearing the guy at the front of a 15 truck line up, if i am the caboose. There are better places to mount it, for sure, but this stays out of the trees, and works well for what i use it for.
