Ignition Timming Advancing

So I am trying to set the timming on my 89 22RE and can't seem to get the timming to stop advancing. I short the terminals TE and E1 (what the book says) then I try and time it. If I rev it up the timming still advances which tells me that the computer is doing it still. I know my short is good because I get the flashing engine light when I short them. If I bring the mark to zero (well almost I run out of distributor) it barely runs. Is there something else I have to short or unplug???

How do I set the timming then??? I can't get it to zero or the truck will not run. Right now it is advanced off the marking plate. It runs pretty good there but would like to know how to set it right??

Your timing should be at 5 degrees, not 0 when you have the TE and E1 jumpered to be in tune. When you remove the jumper it will be at about 8 degrees when warm idle and almost 12 when cold.

it'll run like crap at 0* and have no power.

should be at 5* jumpered, 12* unjumpered at an idle. it'll advance as it revs up, that's what an advance curve is for!

I found the problem. The TPS was not adjusted right so it was not reading idle. That is why I could not get the timing near the plate. I set the timing to 10* as I read somewhere on here. My sticker is rubbed off the hood from undercoating. So is 5* what it should be? It runs great now. That TPS makes a huge differance.

I run mine at 16*. A little better throttle response because the power band is lower.
