I apologize if this has been covered before, but I have searched to no avail...
I am trying to find the right tools to set the exact timing on my 22re, the main thing is that I need a tach that doesn't go off of the coil wire. What is everyone using, I've seen a few snap on and mac timing light/tach's on ebay, but they all seem to go off of the coil wires. I would not be worried about it since I set it at 5* btdc when i did the head gasket and it is running fine, but I was getting 26mpg with a cracked head and bad gasket and now after the brand new engnbldr street/rv head, PAIR and egr delete and new gaskets I'm lucky to see 18 mpg with lucas fuel treatment.

 

Why do you need to know the RPMs when setting timing? Thought you shorted the E1, hooked up a timing light to the first spark plug wire, and set it to 5* BTDC?

Have I been doing this wrong for years?

 

Won't the timing affect the idle and vice versa

 

I know on a carb'd engine the engine's rpm is somewhat critical. If it's above I think 750 ??? then your mechanical advance affects the timing reading. Not sure on an re motor though. I don't think they have a mechanical advance IIRC. But FSM does mention @ max 800 on an RE engine. This doesn't mean put engine at 750 RPM (for 22r) or 800 RPM (for 22re), it just means idle should not be above those when you are setting timing and if your idle happens to be 500 then your ok as far as accurately setting the timing.

 

Well I also wanted to set the timing for my sr5 cluster swap, as the only guages around here are from v6.

 

Not to be a thread jacker but did you ever figure out your ignition timing? I have an 85 pickup with a 22re and nothing happens when i short out the diagnostic plug. Anyone else have this problem? or maybe know what to set the timing at around 1000-1100 rpm?

Idle speed too high as well, turn it down to around 800.

Base timing w/o working TPS or no jumper is 12BTDC.
