Idling High

No this doesn't mean that I smoked something and then decided to park my truck with it still running. I just aquired an 89 xtra cab with a 22re. It had initially idled a bit on the high side, between 1500 and 2000 RPM, while the books all say it should only be at 750. I could manually turn the "butterfly" (metal plate in the throttle body that open and closes to let air in) if i popped the hood and twisted the throttle control thingy on the side of the throttle body, then it would kinda stick closed and idle at 750 until I opened the throttle again. So I just figured that over the years, (it has 250,000 mi. on it) the gunk had built up behind said butterfly and was preventing it from closing all the way. I took it apart this weekend and cleaned it all out with carb cleaner, it is now nice and shiny inside, but now it always idols at 2000 RPM and if I try to manually close the butterfly, it doesn't idol down any further. I am wondering if over time the butterfly or the inside cylinder of the throttle body can wear out? Also, there is about 1/8" of play that I can slide the post that the butterfly is mounted on side to side. Any help would be great.

the throttle shaft should have no appreciable 'side-to-side' movement. if it does, the throttle plate has excessive clearance (wear) and all needs replaced.
