i snappedthe mystery bolt under the timingchain

just like the thread says, about 1/4 inch is sticking out of the block how can i remove it and can i reuse the .head gasket it was torqued down but never started up on. I feel so stupid to tighten that bolt way to much.

Not exactly sure what bolt you're talking about, but I would vote EasyOut...someone please correct me if that's the wrong route to take.

As for the HG, you DO have to replace it if torqued. Doesn't matter if it was run on or not...sorry - I made the same mistake.

With a 1/4" you should be able to get some vise grips on it. Save the HG but don't reuse it, it might work but for the money it's not worth the gamble.

Were you doing a HG or a Timing chain?

Got a welder? Jam a nut on it and weld it to the remaining part if its prone to the head. Jam a damp rag in around the chain so no boogers end up down there.

Before you booger it up too much go ahead and weld a nut on it. It will save y ou a lot of time and will be easier

X2 on th Easy Out, they are super cheap - so if that doesn't work, go another route.

But the easy out is so cheap (like $2) easy and generally work everytime it wouldn't hurt to try that first.

Usually if a bolt breaks off going in it is annoying but still removable. I vote for welding a nut on it. Once you get it broken loose it should come right out if it wasn't slathered in loc-tite like mine usually are. If it had loc-tite on it a lot of times I find that if I heat the bolt while applying slight tension with a wrench, it will melt the loc-tite and come right out.

If a bolt breaks off while you are trying to remove it, it is time to drill it out of the hole and retap the threads. I can usually do that faster than trying to remove it and the threads usually need to be re cut in this situation anyway.

Will welding a nut to an area that close to the block risk distorting the block in any way? I honestly have no idea, just wanted to hear someone's reasoning...iron block not as susceptible to warpage?

that's is a tight spot and in an aluminum head if it's where i think that you are talking about. i know nothing about welding but that seems spooky to me. all that i can imagine is drilling the center of bolt enough to get an easy out started. that really sucks. sorry for ya. just be carefull and take your time whatever you do. pulling that bolt out shouldn't affect the head gasket in any way in my opinion.

yikes. If you pooched the timing cover, you're better off replacing it. I've seen lots on Ebay in the $30-50 price range. Engnbldr.com has them for $54 and those are supposed to be very good quality.

I just bought one of Engnbldr's timing chaning covers and it was good quality, just my $0.02 if you decide to go that route.
