Well, if I ever get around to ordering that por 15 and get my herculiner in, I will take an after pic of my handywork!

How bad is it? If its just surface rust, sand it and have a spray (rhino, line-x, etc)on liner put in.

 

Well, how do yall like the rubber mats that go in the bed? I just got back from tsc and purchased one. I guess it will be a temporary fix until I get the time and money to get a roll/spray in bedliner.

 

I use a rubber mat and really like it. I have also used them on my trucks with a spray on liner.

Sand blast it. You can pick up a cheap sand blaster for like $35. Then blast all the sand out of the bed with a air wand, and go get it rhino lined. Don't use the Line-X, it will soften and melt if you spill gasoline, or carb cleaner on it. And Line-X is more expensive, and usually doesnt come with a warranty. At least mine didn't Three years ago. 3 years was all i got out of it, then i went with rhino linings. Herculiner is great, too. I swear by that stuff. I coated my boat trailer with it, and coated my fender wells, and some interoir panels on my old truck with it. I even put it on my ice cream...

 

I have had two trucks with Line-X and I would not use anything else. I have spilled gas, acetone, carb cleaner, oil and have never had any issues.

 

Where is a good place to get POR 15? Particularly in California.

 

I personally think a rubber mat is the way to go. It's tough, things in the bed don't slide around, and you don't grate your knuckles when you go to lift a box out of the bed. Plus, you just pull it out whenever you want and sweep/rinse out the bed

 

The vehicles at work all have line x on them. They also have a warranty tag riveted on them.

 

Cool, I never thought about that. the only thing I don't like is that the sides of the bed are exposed.

Personally, I don't think the rubber mat is the way to go either. You'll still trap water and rust. Really, unless you're going to coat it with something the best protection against rust is nothing at all. Yeah, rain will fall on it but it will dry out as well. Now a rubber mat over a spray-in liner is a different story......

I don't see a need for something like POR15 under a spray-on liner. The spray is going to coat it anyway. I'd just sand/media-blast it, use some rust converting primer on any rust leftover and coat it.

 

I used rust remover (which didn't really work) and then I hit it with the rust converter before I put the rubber mat in. Hopefully that will work for a while.

 

I would definetly agree with 91TPU, i had a 1992 Isuzu Pick-up that was in terrible shape, it was the family vehicle, bought new passed on to me, so i sanded for 1 week till there was no paint left, used Rust Killer and then a roll on bed liner, and bingo, what a difference, no more rust, and a nice durable liner...only problem is i traded it in for my over priced 4Runner!

 

My bed has big gaping holes in it from the bed liner. If you take it out once a year and wash the bed, you shouldn't have a problem. I got mine from someone who never did that. There was dirt and mud caked in the grooves of the bed. I cleaned it out only to fully reveal the holes. It was so bad, I had to put the liner back in just to use it. I have another bed that I am workign on. I am sandblasting the rusty areas, then rust treatment on the bare metal, sand, prime and paint.

I'm opting to keep the liner and take the time to clean underneath once or twice a year.
