I need to retard ign timing? Proper way?

What is the proper way to adjust timing on my 94 22re? Im sure there probably a plug I gotta un do or a jumper wire to connect? Which direection do I turn the dizzy to retard it? Im getting a ping going up hills. Sorry Im new to the toyta scene.

Jump TE1 and E1 in the diag. box. Set up your timing light...you should be able to hear the idle drop when you jump the connectors. Rev the engine a few times and wait for it to get to operating temp. Turn the dist. away from you (clockwise) to retard timing.

Note, do this with a timing light. Don't just crank the timing back. A little turn = a lot of timing decrease and you can have other issues if you crank back too much timing.

dum question but where is diag. box located? Yeh I got the timing light ready. Oh what is the "factory setting" degrees?

Factory setting is 5* BTDC for the 22RE... The diag. box is located on the passenger fenderwell right near the battery. You should have a large engine bay fuse block (somewhat L shaped), right next to that is a small box that should say "diagnostic" on it.

That is, if it's the same as my 88 model 22RE engine bay...I believe it is.
