HowTo: Get that spare, out of there!

Well, I'm not sure about the 1st gen pickups, but my 3rd gen has a tool kit with these rods that you connect to make one big rod that you put through a hole under the license plate and into a slot on the mechanism and then turn. It should lower all the way to the ground on a chain. Such as this, from my owners manual:
I tried that on mine when taking mine off...it just rounded off all the connecting points on the tools Then I tried just hitting it with a sledge hammer and then got serious with the cutoff wheel

Noticed the spare dangling over the winter. Tried the sawzall and cut off wheel first. Have to say torch it. Wish I had a couple of jack stands but with a helper just caught it. Nasty job any way you look it when you live in a place with bad winters.

I have a roughly 4' piece of 3/4" galvanized pipe. About a foot from the end, it's bent 90 degrees for a handle. The opposite end is hammered flat and fits perfectly into the slotted opening of the winch. It works great, is lightweight, and fits perfectly in my toolbox. As far as the jack goes, some time around 2002, my dad and I were heading home from a day of hunting and had a blow out. The first time the factory bottle jack had ever been used and it blew out too. My dad replaced it with a standard 4 ton bottle jack, but after a couple years, that blew out too. I replaced it in 2008 with a scissor jack from my wife's 99 Suzuki Grand Vitara when my in-laws totaled it. Bought a 4 ton floor jack, broke it the 2nd time I used it and started using the scissor jack again. Haven't had any problems with it.
