Ok....so now that I can say that this method DEFINITELY WORKED, I will finish (kinda) with pics of the end of this little "sub" project.

lined up the front driveshaft



hand tightened the bolts...using the painted matchmarks



started to raise the diff



it bound up on the driver's side



brought out my "friends" to help it change it's mind



but then thought again about that and began to make small adjustments with the jacks underneath. little by little the diff mounts moved closer to where they were supposed to be.

got the driver's side close, but not enough....was able to make some small movement with my hands pushing and pulling on the "axle tube" (as i will call it)...with that, i was able to get the driver's side mount mostly tightened down.



on to the passenger's side....this one you have to do blindly, using your hands as your eyes. using a long screwdriver (from the toolkit, minus the attachment) i was able to get the hole mostly lined up as well. after a few good guesses as to how to "convince" it to move where i need it to go, i was able to bolt this side too. again, snug but not altogether tightened down just yet.



took a break, and then right back to it.

got out the old petroleum jelly...because i knew it's a metal-on-metal game getting this crossmember on, so i applied it to every mating surface.





almost there..........



getting that sideways bolt in proved to be a bit of push-pull-up-down trying to get so the bolt would pass right through....it did, and with it's special nut, properly placed, i tightened it and the 4 other bolts down.



have to find the torque specs in the FSM and troque everything down now.

front bolt that goes side to side...108ft/lbs.....and alot of UMPH.

man...you went through all that work and time and didn't clean all the gunk off before reassembling?

if you mean the pan, i killed the paint on the pan yesterday.

if you mean the diff...that's getting the treatment AFTER i'm up and running.

if you had a body lift say 2" you could use a engine hoist to lift up the block. take off the bolts for the mounts and jack up a lil more. than the stock height for the body. after that taking out the oil pan is easier. did it on my 89 with a auto.
