How much to rebuild a w56?

How much have you guys (and girls) paid to get your w56 transmissions rebuilt? I plain on pulling it out myself and taking it to the transmission place. Just trying to get some quotes, but many shops are VARY vague. (for instance one shop quoted me only 200 dollars and then said that would be if no work needed to be done once they opened it up )

So what is a reasonable price for a FULL rebuild and what kind of warrantee should I be looking for (so far i have found everything from 0 to 5 years)

Price seems to vary from $650 to $1200 but shops also vary as to what a "rebuild" means. Some JUST replace bearings and call that a "rebuild"

Well I tell people that you don't really "rebuild" a manual tranny. Usually you just identify the complaint and replace the offending parts. If you have a crunch going to 2nd or third I replace the second and third synchro rings. If you have bearing noise, I replace the offending bearing. If you have gear noise, I replace the offending gear. If you have a broke shift fork, well you get the idea. I used to replace so many third gears in Mustangs that I could do the whole job in two hours. That includes removal and installation.

What you are running into while trying to get a quote is that it is impossible to have even a ballpark figure as to price before disassembly of the unit.

Personally it think for the cost of rebuilding it is not worth it for a w56. Where i am at anyway w56's are a diem a dozen. Well actually the they are more but if you shope around you can get one for less than 100 bucks. If you can put it in yourself just go get a used one and there you go. I figure even if you get a used one and it only lasts for 50k and i only paid 100 bucks it is a hell of a deal.

Problem is, a used on can have bad syncros, gears, bearings..whatever.. I'd take the gamble for $100, if it wasn't a real pain to pull the tranny and reinstall.

I buy from Marlin also.. quality and peace of mind.

Only place n my town that would touch it told me $1300 for brass and bearings, but if there was any gear damage (which I know there was) it could run over $2000.

I think I paid $800 at a junk yard...

Funny thing is since then I have probably seen 3 of them in the paper for $150.

my own work

I learned how to work on them myself cuz I never had the money to have it rebuiled. It's easy though.

mine wasnt working for a while first was poppin out and 2nd wasnt working either and i took it to a shop paid 325 to fix it with a 6 month warranty. never told me what was wrong with it but he told me that price was gonna be between 200-450 but no more than that no matter what he said and he left it flawless with 6 months. im real happy now i love my truck lol look around i say its better to get it rebuilt than risk getting a junker

Honestly, I'd say my opinion on that depends on what the current transmission is doing and why you feel you need to replace it.

Mine ran out of oil. It was a total write off.

I agree with this. I would rather just drop in another used one rather than have it rebuilt. Where I am from, they are plentiful.

Well, usually they out-last 2 or 3 engines so I agree. The transmissions are bulletproof. As long as it has oil in it and doesn't grind, I have no issue with a used transmission at all.

I have a broken 1st and 2nd shift fork, how difficult is it to replace one? I believe it's a 557 in an 84 Toyota 4x4 x-cab. I don't want to have to tear it completely apart, but nobody around here will give me a straight answer as to how it can be done.

800-1000 bucks for a rebuild can also get you a good used r151

If you have broken gear, chuck it in the garbage. Cost more then what a used or new one will run you. If you want a new trans go to Marlin, if not I would just get a used one and cross your fingers (2-3 hour job vs $1300). I know I don't get paid $400 an hour................

I crossed my fingers 3 times now on different trucks. One got me 30k then input bearing went again and the other 2 are still going strong 30k plus.

I tend to blow 5th gear after about 100K...

1st - OEM
2nd - Junkyard
3rd - Local Rebuilt (from 1st)

Main bearings are rattling now.

Next is
a) the other JY one I got that has 1050K on it
b) Marlin

for b) the plan is a R151 with an adapter (yeah $$$) because as others have noted - getting an R151 is far easier than a "turbo" trans.
I already have a turbo bell housing so I can bolt the R151 to the 22RE

wow, sorry guys i guess i forgot about this one.

I did get it rebuilt at a local transmission shop.

It started to make this random clicking noise like a gear tooth was broke off and rattling around (when the opened it they found many broke off)... then i couldn't get into 1st at all...

I even kept driving it starting in second until my clutch wouldn't grab anymore that's what happens when you start in 2nd for 3k city miles.

Gave a good fight had over 240k on it and they told me it looked like it was never rebuild and was original.

If i remember it was like 895 or something pretty much $900 and needed almost everything replaced, 2 bad gears, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, rev, syncros were bad, bad input shaft, bad clutch, all bearings were bad.... Lots more i cannot remember off the top of my head.

When I got it back (only took 1.5 days) i found a few new things they never told me about... new master and slave cylinder, and new clutch lines, somebody had welded up all the holes in my exhaust. Topped of the engine oil, and cleaned most of the underside of the rig including the engine block. And also new shifter knobs

Yeah, $900 could have got me 9 used transmissions from craigslist. But It is my only driver so the hard part was not the money its trying to figure out how to be without a car for 2 days.

Plus i live in Oregon and every time i try to work on my rig it rains like a mad man.

i've put on about 20k since the rebuild and it's pretty solid... although last week i noticed that it took me a few tries to get into reverse But then today it went in as smooth as butter so i don't know.

^^ it takes me a few times to get mine in reverse about 50% of the time as well.
