BTW - I run 31" with 4.56 gears.
Most people thought I shoulda gone 4.88
I run a 32" in the winter (235/85R16 on a 3.5" backspacing 7" rim)
I got true tracs on each end
Not really a hard core off road truck - its for sno driving etc.
I would LOVE to run a FJ manual xfer case - VF4 with the center torsen...

How much has everyone spent on their regear? I'm looking to do that now and I'm trying to compare costs of leaving the front intact with 4:10s and regearing the rear 4:30, to a 4:10 in the e-locker install....OR leaving the 4:30 rear and spending whatever to regear the front to a 4:30 plus the cost of the hard to find 7.5" 4:30. What do you guys think I'm looking at as far as costs of the regear?
I also scored 4:56 from my friends yard with the whole front end $250.Gearing is the way to go for installing bigger tires.

Buy once and cry once I always say.
As I see it if you wanna run between 33 or 35" tires and have a stick 4.88's will do. 5.29 imho is to much if you ever decide to downsize from 35's (if you go with them initially) back to 33's. With 4.88 you can go from 31 to 33 to 35 with minimal power loss imho.
Auto is a whole nother story and your kinda stuck with 5.29's if you go for 33's.
If it were me buying I would do 33 and 4.88...

Astro automotive in Denver will setup a diff, if you bring them in, for 100 bucks. Figure 200 for 4.56s each end and a 100 dollar install kit. About 600 for just parts, then 200 labor.

Wow, thanks for the reply guys. Just got back from work. Well I have the 5spd tranny. The highest I'd ever run would be 33s, no way I'd do 35s. But even still, like I said, it's really not worth spending all that much for 1" in clearance. So, that's why I was saying, I'd like to do one or the other, so I can spend on 1 set of gears and 1 regear. Can you imagine driving on 29" tires w/4:88s? If I got a helluva deal on 4:56, I'd even do that, but that's still spending on 2 gears.
Sonofmayhem, so if I took it to Astro automotive, I'd basically be spending $100 to regear, then I'd install my third. Plus whatever the 4:30 costs me. Figure, maybe $250 total. That sounds much better than $800!

I have no idea where you guys all get so lucky with cheap labour on setting up diffs. I was about to get mine done in 5.29's. After phoning around for a few hours i could only find one place that was wiling to do them and they wanted $1300 labour only. That was if i brought the diffs in and i supplied all the parts. So for now i'll be running my 4.10's i guess.

I had thought of sending the thirds to him but i believe he is located in Arizona. I'm up in Canada so shipping would be extremely expensive, and also take forever. I think i'll end up doing them myself, its been a few years since i set up a diff but it'll come back to me.

Just like djlarroc, I am pondering doing the same things in my 88Runner with A/T & V6. I believe I have 4.10s and although my RPMs are ok on the highway, 70MPH and 2500RPM, I want at least 33s. I was just gonna go straight to the 4.88s with lockers F & R. What do you think?

For anyone actively shopping for gears check this out:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Toyot...2103QQtcZphoto
I bought my 5.29's there. Service and product were just fine. I think I paid the non sale price too. He appears to have 410, 456, 488, 529, and 571 in the 8" but no deals on the 7.5 inch.

what gears does my stock 87 yota runner have in it? and what size (inches) are they?good for running a 33-35 tire range? what donor trucks (any make/model that will fit) can i pull those gears that will work for 33's or 35's? i had an idea the other day, that if i put lower gears in, with the stock tire size (29) i can get more balls in my runner. good idea? bad idea? what can i do yto get more balls in the deathruner of doom? thanks guys, and sorry for the noob question

$150.00 for a 4:30 geared E-Locker dropout off of e-bay, [ guy never knew what he had ].
$300.00 for the front differential 4:30 geared picked up locally. [ going rate for front diffs here locally ].
So $450.00
My own labor to swap em out and do the rear end housing mod to accept an E-Locker.

I found someone here on c-list selling a complete 4.30 front third for $50!! haha. It's for a '99 Runner though, so won't fit my truck.

If you have a dial indicator and a spare third member and TIME on yer hands - set up up yerself?
Be PATIENT and do it slowly?
Heck the shop I used (yeah I trust em) told ME to seld up up myself... but I ended up shelling out $300 for the work as I had no time to deal with it.
