How I fixed my sluggish 22re

I thought I might throw this out there as some cheap things I did to my fix my sluggish 22re performance.

I have a 1990 Pickup 4x4 with a rebuilt 22re. Less then 30,000 miles on the rebuilt motor.

Only problem is whoever put the motor in did a crappy job at hooking it all up and I'm in the process of replacing things bit by bit.

One day it just started running so slow. It was bogging down taking off at stop lights and just had absolutely no power what so ever. And forget turning on the AC in this florida sun. I went faster standing still.

So After searching ALL the forums and never finding a post with anyone saying they actually fixed their problem, I did the following which has resolved my issue.

I figured it was a fuel or vacuum related issue so I replaced my old rusty brake booster. It got better after, but started to bog again.

Then I replaced my PCV valve. It's only like $1.40 on rockauto.com. But I noticed that the plastic grommet that holds the valve/hose in place was rotted out. When I would rev my engine I could also hear a slight sucking sound.

So I got some rubbing tubing and jammed the new PCV valve into it and then into the case. Fits lit a glove and it fixed the sucking sound.

I then replaced my oxygen sensor and my fuel filter.

Then I threw a can of Seafoam into the gas tank, 1/3 can of it into the crank case, and then removing the vacuum hose from my brake booster, I poured 1/3 of a can into the hose SLOWLY while the engine was running and warm.

It started bellowing out white smoke. I turned off the engine for 5 minutes per the instructions, and low and behold, my truck is running like new!

So, I can't say if it was the fuel filter, PCV valve, new PCV grommet or the oxygen sensor, but without counting the cost of the brake booster, I spent less then $80 (including 2 cans of seafoam) and it runs like new.

I hope this helps somebody out there. This combination of replacements helped tremendously and resolved my issue.

I love SEAFOAM!!!! I swear its the greatest invention ever. I use it in everything gas-powered I own. If I could drink it I would. Best cleaner/fuel stabilizer ever
