How does my block look?

Other than the horrible yellow on the block I would say it looks pretty good. The paint worries me because it isn't factory...obviously

Anyway, here are the pics...let me know if you see any problems.

Thanks, Trevor

Also, is the spot for the key a serious problem???

That crank is pretty mangled. I would be putting a new crank in it, that key way like that is indeed a very serious problem.

Agreed. I would be sourcing a new crank for sure.

you mean you bought it like that? that crank is roast but everything else looks good. with some cleaning and new paint it would look like new.

i hate engines too lol, but i am doing some research right now for a chevy 4.3 TBI vortec swap. toyota made a good truck, and aisin made a good transmission, but toyota did not make a very good v6 motor till the newer gens.

yeah how in the hell do you do that do a shaft key slot?

you can pick up a new crank kit for not too much; it'll come with matching rod and main bearings too

anyone else notice the out of order main caps? #1, and then #4

Good eyes to catch that! It looks like someone has been in there before. I'm wondering if they bashed the key way trying to get the crank bolt and balancer off.

The only things that make me pause are the out of order main caps and the fact that the number 1 cylinder is really really clean where as the other three show normal wear and carbon build up. Oh and that crank is shot, I wouldn't trust that thing as a paper weight. I can't tell from the pictures but there seems to be a ridge at the top of the cylinders that is a lot more pronounced than it should be.

To me it looks like a very high mile block, or one that was treated badly, that someone dug into trying to repair an issue with the number 1 cylinder (busted piston, bent rod, whatever) and did a terrible job of putting it back together.

My advice is to gut it and have it hot tanked. Take a long hard look at it, check the cylinders with a micrometer, look really hard at the main caps and surfaces. You might be able to have it bored a bit ot honed (the walls look ok) and rebuild it but you have got to get a new crank shaft.

Have it tanked and post up pics. These blocks are pretty darn tough.

edit:To the right above the area where the rod attaches to the crank that block looks like it has a long crack in it. I'm not familiar with the internals of a 22re but that caught my eye. That looks to be the number 1 rod connection to the crank and would explain why the number one piston and cylinder wall are so clean. Something happened there I think.

I think that's a casting line.

That block scares me. I wonder if it's a mix and match frankenstein block. It will probably need to be line-bored in addition to the other machine work just to make sure the bearing journals are all true.

I have to disagree with that. You can see casting imperfections in a couple of places on that block where the main bearing mounts are. They are rough and a little shaded..... that line I mentioned is a sharp line. I really think it's a cracked block.

yeah that's just a casting mark; there's actually a line like that at every cylinder

I think it's the oily block and the camera flash playing tricks on the eyeball

Oh! Well now I feel like an idiot. It REALLY looks like a crack in that picture. It just looks like a sharp break in the metal and kind of freaked me out. Thanks for the heads up.

edit: Having said that and seen what you posted wouldn't a block crack along the casting line? I mean if a block were to break I would assume that it would break at the weakest point. Could that still be a break?? I would really like to have hands/eyes on that block to be sure. It just looks too angry to be a trick of the camera.

Bleeder I believe you. It just looks too funky. The other casting marks on that block are more normal looking. That and the fact that the number 1 piston and cylinder wall are so clean makes me think that there was/is an issue there. I know that you know about a busted block since your's only made it to just under 300,000 miles (you really should take better care of that engine ) but that line just looks off to me.

looks like i've sourced another block. Can't waste money on free!

I'm not too worried about the caps. And what order they are in. I just can't wait to piece it all together and spend all my money!
