How do you diagnose a timing chain problem?

I'll let the experts comment, but I had an inch or more play in my timing chain before I replaced the chain, guides and tensioner. After replacing it, I'd guess that I had < 3/16" play (based on recollection of a couple months and more than a couple beers ago).

Seriously though, I don't think that you should have anywhere near that much play (~1") in your timing chain.
