how do I check transmission codes?

I can't find how to check the auto tranny codes. I have an FSM and its automatic transmission section talks about symptoms and diagnostics.... but I don't see any mention of transmission codes.

mine is a 1986
I have searched and see threads indicating that it can be done, but I'm not clear if that is all years or perhaps later OBD vehicles?

how do I check them and what should I look for?

thanks in advance.

This is the 1993 Manual, for the A340H transmission. I don't know what transmissions were available in 1986 (and I certainly don't know which one you have).
