Hood Insulation questions!
Well my hood insulation is damn near gone....so I can get a new one from the dealer at what, 300+? I can leave it off and watch my hood steam like a cracked open radiator in the rain, or I can use "quick fix" from home depot to cover the underside. Quick fix is a thinner version of dynamat extreme, therefore its asphault based with an aluminum lining. The one trip up is that each strip of it is only 6" wide...lol
Has anyone run this stuff on the hood underside? And what would yall do? Just leave it be and get people to stare when im sitting at a light in the rain?

I had a similar question when I swapped my OEM hood for the OEM scooped hood. The scooped hood didn't come w/ a liner and I asked the body shop if this would cause discoloration. He said no so I never bothered.
If you have more info, that would be helpful.

I would'nt worry about it that hood liner is just a sound deading thing... but if you are concerned there was a post here a long time ago about using that dynamat like product but it was in much wider sheets then 6" this stuff was in rolls about 24" wide but was black sticky I think it is sold as a roof / wall sealant strip. I know you can buy foil backed sheets of fibreglass insulation from HVAC trade suppliers. I think it is sold as fridge insulation... The stuff comes in several different thicknesses, some more rigid then others... a bit of that and some 3M spray adhesive and you'd be laughing...

I would like to get one for my 89, it didnt come with a liner. They are designed to extinguish fires, and I think an asphault substitute would just fuel the fire. So I havent used that or foam rubber with sticky on one side.
watching in case someone knows where to get the safe aftermarket version.

I pulled the falling insulation off my 2nd generation hood 5 years ago.
It's never cracked the paint nor have I ever seen steam in the rain.
I'd guess that it's not mandatory. As far as the asphalt type - I think that
you would have a melted gooey mess and that would SUCK !!!
Use the money elsewhere !

My OEM insulation fell off during my HG repair. I drove around without it for about a week. There was a ton of steam coming off the hood in the rain and snow.. Enough to cause concern. I got a cheap ass heat insulation pad from pep boys. I cut it to fit, and it works like a charm. I don't think it was more than 20 bucks. I would get something on there if I were you. Why chance it? You don't want your hood to end up lookin' like ˟˟˟˟˟.

Or just grab your self a rattle can of bed liner if thats what you want to do...
I agree with the other posts that asphalt stuff would just make an unholy mess of everything.
Personally other than some sort of OEM replacement part I can't improve on foil faced fibreglass...
