I need some help here...

My rear ujoint is shot, so I bought a new one and pulled the driveshaft. I've taken out the clips and pounded the piss out of the bearing cups but they won't budge. I've tried heating it up and quenching it with WD40 and Liquid Wrench, still no movement at all.

I just called a few shops around here and they all want an hour's labour at $80/hr to get it out for me. I don't have access to a big enough vise to use the vise-and-a-socket trick. My air compressor just popped a pinhole in the tank so a die grinder with a 7" cutoff wheel is out (unless I spend a bunch of money on tools.. hehehe)

Anybody have any ideas?

Any farm equipment dealers in your area?

They will probably let you use their press for free.

 

Not any close enough to drive to, but if I don't get any bright ideas soon I'll probably whore a drive from someone

 

If you try pounding them out, remember the driveshaft has to be supported on a vise or anvil, to make the hammer punch routine work.

 

i'm sort of hanging the shaft off the edge of a bench. i'll try supporting it on a vise in one minute..

 

A 4-5 pound hammer works best. Gotta shock the rust and the caps to get em out.

 

You could use a spike, poke through the outer cap on both sides, and then get everything except the caps out. Then you could go back with a chisel and a GIANT hammer to chip away at the caps. I've had to do this once and it is frustrating! But that's how I got it out

 

it moved about 1/32, maybe 1/16. i need a bigger vise!

edit: all good suggestions, thanks guys. i'm using a pretty big hammer, i'm sort of afraid of bending or mangling the yoke. i can't get any real good bashes in cause the vise i have won't hold the oddly shaped yoke still, so i'm going to have to rig up something with some blocks of wood to hold it real tight. then we'll let the real fun begin!

 

If you have it moving/moved your almost home free. Knock it back the other way.

 

Just open the vise enough to let the cap slip through.

 

i'd need three hands - one to hold the yoke, one to hold the punch, and one to swing the hammer. and there's no way i'm letting my girlfriend hold any of those things with one of us wildly swinging a maul.

once i get some of this pesky schoolwork done i'll elaborately string the driveshaft across several benches to support itself.

 

This is where redneck enginnering comes into play.

Support the other end of the driveshaft on block, a bucket or whatever is close to the height of the driveshaft off of the bench.

 

Use a angle grinder to cut it out, ive done it a few times works great

i use a socket slightly smaller than the cap and on the other side a socket slightly larger than the cap and beat on the smaller one. kinda of a cheap press.

 

i've never had a problem with my 'yota u-joints. i did a friend's full size dodge's u-joints though, and ended up having to cut them out with the oxy/set torch. that was fun...

for my yota, i use a 5lb hammer and a socket just smaller than the cap. pound it back and forth, spray with PB blast until one cap pops off. it's all downhill from there.
