hey there my 85 sr5 efi solid axle 4runner is not revving high but also pops or goes up and down like plugs or timing . So I also did wires and such and still doing it . Just talked to another enthusiast of this site in person and he seemed to think the rev idler on the valve cover . just a thought though cuz my truck is also acting bad , but then drives fine. good luck .

Maybe retard the timing? I have found best MPG's with timing a bit advanced from factory which causes intermittent high idle and a bit of popping. But its getting 22 hwy so Its worth it.

1st-Check for and fix any vacuum leaks. Vacuum leaks will cause a high idle and popping. 2nd- clean the throttle body. If any buildup is holding the butterfly open even a little bit, it will loose idle signal in the tps and may run erratically. 3rd- check the idle air screw on the throttle body, remove it, clean the port with carb cleaner and check the oring on the screw, replace the oring if it is hard, cracked or otherwise in poor condition. (it probably is). Reset the idle speed when warmed up with the screw. Do these three things in that order before anything else. It may or may not help, but these are contributing factors to many 22re issues.

My next suggestion is to check for air in the cooling system. Because of the shape of the upper hose, a small air pocket can form near the temp sensor. That will typically cause a surging idle though, not just a high idle. I will also suggest checking all the basics. Do a compression test then check valve clearance. These engines do burn exhaust valves. Check the timing marks when you check the valve clearance. If all this checks out, its time to start testing electrical. I'm afraid that without actually seeing and checking it myself, I won't be of much more help. Good luck to you

i just found the little manual fuel pressure regulator hangin down behind the intake. anyone think that it mite be out of adjustment and thats why it idles so high no matter what i do ?? maybe its dumpin to much fuel in the motor because it does run rich at all hell

Why do you have a manual fuel pressure regulator? And why did you not mention that and the fact that it runs rich before? Quote: "when you rev the motor or drive it it runs fine." I think its time to start throwing parts at it. You should start with a new air flow meter. When that doesnt fix it, a new gas tank, when that doesn't fix it, just put a 350 in it

its like a factory regulator. and yes when you drive it or rev it its fine just rich as hell. i just started it and ran it for a bit and i turned the tps as far down as it would go and played with the regulator and it idled down then slowly went back up. its not runnin as rich anymore thou. i also turned the idle screw in all the way when i did that
