HG or rpm signal....

Well its been the moment I knew would come. The awful head gasket is coming. At least I think so. Random misfirws on coasting to a stop after going 70, got code 12 now which is rpm signal. Havent decided rather to check yet since its smoking like a sig. Man the time before it used to only do it in the cold now its like its a chain smoker especially on a coast or low speed. High speed I cant tell woo hoo lol. Any recommendations for tuing to do while I do this? Anyone had luck with the head gasket kits off ebay?

Does a bad head gasket cause random misfires? A bad distributor certainly will (and misfires are the simplest cause of smoke), and a bad distributor could set code .... 12.

Incidentally, the "smoke" you see in the cold is just water vapor (stick your hand in it; it will feel "wet," not "oily"). Water vapor is the natural byproduct of combustion. You don't see it once the exhaust train is warmed up, because the vapor exits at a high enough temperature to not condense.
