Help.. transmission probs and shady mechanic
Wondering if I could get some advice..
three years ago I took my 94 4runner to a transmission mechanic to be rebuilt (can't remember exactly what new parts were used). 22RE 5spd. About a week after I got the truck back I was driving up the pass in 3rd gear and noticed a whine and that the truck was slowing down... I pulled off and noticed the tranny was hot. I checked the oil and it was really low. I filled it and took it to him telling what happened. I left the truck there and came back, he said he made sure everything was okay.
fast forward to now, three years later.
driving home and I shift into third to notice a bad sound/vibration.. like a chipped tooth or something.. on 3rd gear. So I take the truck to him and he drives it.
yep, 3rd gear is bad, maybe your countershaft too. that will be $800. And this wouldn't be from oil problems, probably your big tires and hard driving.
What do I do? It wasn't an actual commercial shop.. a guy who works for a shop who does side jobs from his home shop.
thanks

absolutely do not take it to a toyota dealer unless you want to buy a new transmission. They will just outsource it and most likely not rebuild it in house. Have a reputable shop rebuild your transmission or locate a used one and replace. He is apparently not doing it right so i would not give him another shot. Look into marlin crawler as they sell transmissions that have been rebuilt. There time frame on the other hand can be a little extended as i found out a couple years ago. I went through a bad transmission a few years back and didn't have much time to waffle and think about it. I ended up purchasing a new transmission from the dealer for a very good price. If you can do the removal and install look into finding a new or rebuilt transmission on your own. If all else fails go to a reputable shop and get a warranty.
