Your clutch only disengages engine rpm from transmission. If your truck won’t go into 2wd then something is wrong with your transfer case shich is mated and bolted to the back end of your transmission. The 1980 toyota 4x4 pickup has a gear shifter that goes straight into top of transfer case. Often called a “top loader”. If you know how, secure your truck up on jack stands so all 4 wheels off the ground. Put transmission in neutral with engine not running. Have a buddy turn rear wheels back and forth a few inches enough to see rear driveshaft turn a bit back snd forth. As he does thst try shifting into 2wd. You can unlock front hubs and turn front driveshaft to verify if its in 2wd or 4 high. I would check transfer case oil level. It should be the colour of clear maple syrup. If its black its time to change. If its white or brown you have water in transfer case. If its low on oil the internal shifting mechanism could not be getting lubricated and components are jammed or binding. Hope that helps. Let me know how it works out.

Normally when moving down the road with clutch pedal up or down or 1/2 way down with no throttle under 30 mph or 50 kph you should be sble to shift from 4 high to 2wd no problem

You need to come to full stop with transmission in neutral to shift into or out of 4 low

Once transmission is in neutral the clutch has nothing to do with going into 4wd or 2wd. If truck us rolling down a hill with transmission in neutral at a walking pace you should be able to easily shift transfercase into 2wd. If you cant then you need to troubleshoot transfer case internals by my first previous post today

Got it fixed. Removed shifter and the spring was not in place so had to line up two shifting rods then put spring back on. Thanks

Right on! Sounds like a quick easy fix! Always nice when its not a serious repair that is costly and lots of down time!
