HELP! Superpooch
So I picked up this 86 4runner for $700 with a 4" or 6" trail master suspension lift and 3" body lift, 3" fender flares, sitting on 31" tsl boggers with 65% tread with super solid frame and the body is dang near perfect so no matter what im not mad about my purchase.
Originally truck had a turbo with an automatic so it has digital dash and either 4:30 gears or 4:88. Previous owner swapped 22ret for a 22re from an 87 pickup. I purchased the truck not running and without ecm. I bought one from auto zone and put it on and got truck running.
My problem is that the trans is not functioning correctly. When you put it in drive it acts like it wants to take off in 3rd gear... You can manually shift it starting in 1st and it's alot better but I also don't have over drive so top speed is like 50mph.

Autozone ECU??? I'd go with toyota ECU. These kinda things you really don't want to stray away from toyota parts
Are you sure ECM is for 22RE with auto? despite what counter jockey tells you the computer says
I wiring harness correct for years of motor and ECM.
Welcome to yotatech.

Ya before I picked it up I knew the guys that did the swap couldn't find an ecm (about 5 years ago)... After researching from what I could find 86 & 87 didn't have a difference between auto and manual but it is different between turbo and non, and the wire harness would work also

You'll be happier with performance of a 5 spd, but that doesn't answer ECU problem.
Sometimes toyota makes changes, this is why there's 86 22RE and 22R. I would suspect ECU before wiring hareness but.... Fun part of getting a part complete project someone stopped on but price is sweet; I'd've done it. Do you know anybody with that has a running same year 22re auto. Burrow their ECU to test. Will narrow done hunt.

Everybody I know has a 5 speed... It's like the trans is in a manual operation mode, it doesn't up shift or down shift but manually shifting the trans goes into reverse and thru 1st, 2nd, and drive and back just fine... Press the button for overdrive and it does nothing.

Never worked on one but from what I understand it is cable driven with a digital converter built into the speedometer head. Cable could have come out of the back of the cluster or may not be hooked up to transmission.
It will be on passenger side rear of transfer case
