Help with removing PO steering hack

So here are the picture and I am very new to the Toyota truck scene. I just want to put it like it would be from factory if that’s possible. Here’s what I found. So unfortunately I drove the truck and took it as is, closer inspection I almost regret it due to all the issues I’ve found so far but I want to start with this one. I feel if I take it one at a time and hopefully with the help of real enthusiasts with great knowledge I will keep this truck going. I’m all for “stock” oem and nothing more but I’ve got here something that seems far from that. Any help is appreciated as to where to find parts new or used. It’s 1986 4x4 22r
that being said the truck starts and drives pretty good for having 260k on the clock.

yes exactly, not sure how much it helps but it’s pushing into the coolant hose that’s my biggest concern. Seems loose also the last joint that connects to the steering box is loose the whole assembly can move slightly being it’s on the fender which isn’t very strong metal

You'll need to get another steering column shaft. if you post your model number and production date I could give you what range of trucks have the same one. The model number is on a metal plate on the firewall. production date is on the door jam plate. Does it have tilt steering?
I've never seen that unit. Interesting. Does it work? I did find some sellers offering that type of unit. Maybe you could resell and get some money back.

Agreed on removing that. The splines don't look great. When i got mine I spent several days removing aftermarket stuff; along with repairing poorly done wiring connections; resoldering and shrink tubing back together. Especially under dash on driver's side and around battery.

steering is easy so I believe it works but I don’t mind not having power steering at least for now.. I also have thought of making it work properly without it touching the coolant hose but I do not have fabrication tools and this thing looks to be welded on.

It does not have tilt steering at least I couldn’t find any way to adjust so I assume it doesn’t.

It's kinda hard to tell just how much of the shaft has been altered. But any 86,87,88 4wd will work. Actually, up to 3/89, but 1989 is a wonky year so i left it out.
I checked some 2wd applications (RN5#) and the part number was different.

If you get the time, got to amayama.com or EPC-data.com and practice looking parts up using the model number and production date. The diagrams can be helpful, too.

so I went back and notice that the truck does have tilt steering but I think I’ve found a used part that works and labeled as tilt steering wheel applicable. Thanks for the help I will look at those sites

The one section you definitely need, the section that connects to the steering gear box, is the same, regardless of tilt. It’s the section that goes from firewall to steering wheel that matters on tilt or not. And I’m not sure if you need that.

I’ve ordered the used part that shows the bottom piece u joints that attach to the steering box included and the top is splines and the top section on my truck seems fine I just hope the steering box shaft hasn’t been messed up too bad, I will report back once I get the part and have time to try out the fix. Once this is done I can start cleaning the massive amount of oil that has accumulated on the bottom half of the engine and front of the transmission. Then figure out the wiring. A project for sure that fortunately drives, stops and shifts fine.

That looks pretty bad. Looks like the steering shaft is barely engaging the splines on the box.

If you ever feel like it, you can add factory power steering real easy, if you can track down the parts. Well worth it in my opinion

There’s several PYP yards near Norco. Download their app and put 1984-1988 Toyota pickup in your “garage” and you’ll get alerts whenever a vehicle hits the ground at that location. Pulling your own parts is the way to go. And don’t forget to grab all the nuts and bolts you can. That’s the real money😀

Although hacky, thats pretty cool. Ive heard of people adding these on toyots and sammys that came with manual steering.

Still not right, you need to extend the shaft to grab all the splines and use a through bolt at the box. You're grabbing a mediocre amount of splines at both the box and firewall
