Get some wrenches, I'll guide you step by step. I won't even charge ya $350

Its really very simple to do, it doesn't take much "knowledge".

Here is all the actual knowledge it takes: Righty Tighty Lefty Loosy

Even so, don't take it to a dealer. Take it to an independent shop that wont rape you just to look at the diff and say "yup, its broken"

you need a 10,12,14,17,19mm socket and boxwrench to fix about 1/2 of everything on these trucks. pulling a rear 3rd is REAL easy....

lift truck up to tires are just off the ground. put jackstand under axle.
drain the diff
disconnect break hard lines from drum. (10mm box)
disconnect ebrake.
remove the driveshaft from the 3rd. 4, 14mm nuts and bolts. (easiest done with 2 14 box wrenches)
remove the 4nuts attaching the drums to the (14mm) on each side
grab the tire and pull out, you will pull the tire, drum and axleshaft out. it only needs to come out 3-4 inches.
repeat on the other side.
remove the 12, 12mm nuts holding the 3rd.
pull the 3rd out.


to install put some copper ultra RTV on the 3rd slap it back in, and do the opposite of what you did to take it out.

its goign to be WAY cheaper to take in just the 3rd to get fixed than having toyota do it all....

ok, so you know it's in the rear since the driveshaft is spinning. you can put it in 4wd and drive it home now and cut your losses. when you get that sucker home, jack up the back of the truck by putting the jack under the rear pumpkin, then put jack stands on each side under the axle.

you can certainly open up the pumpkin and swap some used parts in. it is within your capability and you have access to factory svc. manual here, as well as good advice live online. you can do it! :-)

Now I see Tofer already has step by steps up there for ya, you can do it man!

Exactly..but they are 14mm nuts, and copper RTV is no the best choice. I would stick to "The Right Stuff" made by permatex, or factory toyota FIPG.

Also, i would take the tires off. Resetting those axles with the rims and tires on is a MAJOR pITA.

your right they are 14mm. and i forgot you need to take the driveshaft off (4 14mm bolts)

i've always left the tires on, its not that hard to reset, especially if you have someone else there, but i've done it by myself as well. but taking the tires off isnt that hard and would make it easier to put back on if its your first time.

ahh i dunno guys i would feel comfortable if someone walked me through in person but i dont trust myself doing it "unsupervised" i just dont want to mess anything up

what are you going to mess up? its already broken lol. just do your best and dont be affraid to ask questions. you will forever be stuck in a loop of paying retarded costs to have someone else fix something you could easily do yourself if you just make the attempt to learn how yourself. the first time i pulled a motor apart i did it on my own because i couldnt afford to let someone else do it. now i wont let anyone else touch my things unless its a friend and they are helping me do it.

im tellin you man. if you do it yourself... when you get it all back together and you put that first mile on it, you will get a feeling inside that will make you glad you did it and make you want to never go back to a shop again.

Besides, i have family in York....that would be a good time to visit them!

When i first started working on my truck i will admit, i was scared. But just relax and do one thing at a time, mark your bolts and put em in bags.

There are alot of people on here that will help you, as mentioned above. It might take you a while to do but I wouldnt give someone that much money just to look at it.

Get your truck back, get all your tools and might wanna print out the steps just for grins.

When you finish working on your truck, and everything is back together, you will feel amazing.

You can do it!

if bigt can change diffs...5 times this year.. you can too.. just need a jack and stands and maybe a flare wrench 10/11mm for your brakelines.. you have to undo them unless you have really long ones like on my trail rig you can just slid the axles out with the brakes still attached.....

just take 4 nuts off drive shaft.. then 4 bolts each side of axle and like 10 around the diff.. pull the axles and the diff will come right out...

get a junkyard one for under 100 bucks BIGATY BAM!

i drove from tacoma wa to newport vermont in 94 hours by myself in my jetta with a cat. i left on teusday at 7pm and go there at 6pm on friday

you could probably swap out the whole rear end with a junkyard unit for less than they will charge you just to take your current rear end apart. and pay the neighbor or a freind a 12 pack of beer to change it out for you
