Help needed, remote engine starter

Hi, recently i have finally bought my 1st gen 4runner with 3vze. I am having, among all, trouble to start the engine, it seems like the remote controller wont allow ignition switch to crank the engine. when i press the button on the remote it will unlock it but wont allow to crank. cant say the model, but it is a Pursuit company product, think around 89' or so, my 4 runner is 88'. I can crank the engine when it is connected directly to the relay. help anyone? thnx

It sounds like it has a starter kill, so that someone can't start the engine without first disarming the alarm. Usually this is implemented by cutting the starter wire coming from the ignition switch and putting a relay between the two ends. If the alarm is disarmed, it will pull ground and allow the relay to close when you turn the key. If it is armed, it doesn't ground the relay, and nothing happens when you turn the key. Sometimes the relay goes bad and won't allow you to start the truck, armed or disarmed. Look under your steering column for some wires that have been spliced into. Check the quality of the splices, if they're still good after all these years. If everything looks okay, your relay is suspect. You can either replace it yourself, or bypass it. Bypassing it would involve just removing the relay and reconnecting the two ends of the wire.

Wow! That's quite a load of crap. You'll definitely be more reliable without all that!

Enjoy your 4Runner!
