Help me spend $500 on my 87 4Runner
Ok so I have $500 I can put into my 87 4Runner.
Here is what it has currently done to it.
3" BL
33" Tires
4.88 Gears
Lockright in rear.
Sway bar removed.
Low Profile bumper stops.
Headers.
Locker up front, 4.7gears, 2"suspension lift???
I'd like to get it where I could do the John Bull trail.

What engine? Add all of those important details to your signature please -- under user profile.
Synthetic fluids have made a big difference for me, especially in the diffs.

New headlights and wiring harness: ~$150
New shocks (I like Bilstein): ~$300
Steering bump stops: ~$30
A case of beer: ~$20
*Sorry -- I'm a 3vze so can't help too much on the engine.
Alternatives:
3vze front brake swap (larger rotors and pads): ~$250?
larger bore brake master cylinder: ~$100
brake fluid flush: ~$50
diff breather extensions ~$50
tail light rehab (new lenses ~$60), sanding and spray paint for housings including plastic adhesion promoter (~$15).
front turn signal replace (full housings and lights) ~$60
new plugs, wires, rotors and caps, ~$75

Thanks for the suggestions RSR. I have already done some of those but the others give me even more to think about.
I think I'm going to either go with the locker up front or the 4.7 in the TC.
Hmmm...

4.7 would be my first choice. Did quite a bit with that setup. Would only do a selectable locker up front, unless you have locking hubs.

I do have locking hubs.
I think I should hold off on the front locker in case I ever decide to do a SAS, then look at the cost and everything involved and wonder if that will ever really happen.
I should just go 4.7 and a locker in the front! It would only be a "little over budget" it's what i would tell my wife
Then down the road look at upgrading the IFS.

If you can weld or know someone, you can make a set of sliders like 4crawler, plus do 4.7s. The gears are on sale right now, in case you didn't know.

Armor. Specifically a Budbuilt tranny/t-case plate and then some sliders. I ran my 89 with 5.29's Aussie in the rear, Lock-rite in the front on 33 inch Guard Dogs and the Budbuilt plate saved my butt several times. With that short of a wheel base you're going to encounter climbs where you need the extra 2" of clearance and/or the plate to take a hit and protect your tranny/t-case.
Just my .02$
