Help me diagnose this noise

Hey All,

I've noticed a noise as I'm driving coming from the front end of my truck. It's an 88 Pickup, 22RE, 5MT, 171,500 miles, all stock (to my knowledge). It sounds almost like a fluttering, frequency is speed dependent. I thought it may be a wheel bearing at first, but now thinking it may be transmission related, as it doesn't seem to happen in 5th gear, but does happen cycling 2nd thru 4th and is especially apparent while slowing down in 4th gear around 30-35mpg.

My truck has been sitting for about 8 months, and I just got it back and noticed this.

Take a look/listen:

Thanks for the help!

Sound like someone put a zip tie on your driveline
People hate that!

But that is the sound I am looking for? Like running your fingernails over a comb? Metallic?
Does it do it only in gear, or also when you rev the engine?

My transfercae made a sound like that, it was a little piece of metal in a bearing. But it was much louder than your sound:

Yeah, good description, sounds like running fingernails over a comb. It happens when in gear and in neutral. Revving the engine doesn't seem to have an affect, only the speed of travel. The sound is very faint, it's hardly audible (the videos actually help to hear it much clearer).

Hubs are both actually unlocked and transfer case in 2wd?

Remove rear driveline and drive it in 4wd. Noise still there?

Yep, hubs are both unlocked and it's in 2wd. Passenger hub seems to be harder to engage than driver side, so maybe something is an issue there. I'm going to get it jacked up over the weekend and try to see if I can spin the wheels and figure out where the noise is coming from that way.

You can see if the wheels turn but the front axles don't - means it's actually disconnected (Wheel to hub).

btw, is that Fremont you're driving down? My old hood, I miss it so much. I'm originally from Los Altos. (before the ˟˟˟˟ show)
While my Runner is in Germany now, it drove down that exact freeway 100%

I love this old truck. And I love California.

Yep, 880-S thru Fremont. Good eye. I'm sure it's very different now... traffic here is insane.

Check and see if the grill is loose. Zip ties work great if it's loose.

Nothing yet unfortunately. My truck has been parked a couple months. I need to go get it soon and figure this out, hopefully will have an idea in the next couple of weeks.
