Arrow HELP ME! 7.5" vs 8" rear diff. ...????

The rearend locked up on me in my 89 toy. I have found a used rearend out of an 85... are they the same and how can I tell if the 85 is a 7.5" or 8"? .... is there any way to tell without taking the third member out to measure the gears? Does the code on the axle housing indicate the size?

The good news is that I found the 85 complete rearend for $120!!! Thanks to good ol' Craigslist!!!!!!

If you have a 2wd you should have a 7.5" ring gear in the rear. If you have a 4wd then you have an 8" ring gear. And 8" toyota housing from a 79-95 pick-up or 4runner will work.

You may want to consider the ratio as well. This becomes even more critical if you have a 4wd as the front and rear need to the same.

Thanks all who replyed - Just a quick update... I decided to quit being a sissy and get my hands dirty... lucky for me the 85 rearend has the same gear ratio (4.10) as my 89. The only difference is that the flange on the third member which the driveline bolts to has smaller bolt holes.

What's the vehicles? You can probably swap the driveshafts out, if you don't want to mess with the pinion flange.

The 85 rear end is 2 inches shorter than the one is your truck. In 86 toyota made the axle wider to match the new ifs setup. If I were you I'd look for a 86+ rear...you might run into some clearance issues plus the narrower rear might be a little bit more unstable.

Edit: the above info is for a 4x4, I have no idea about the 2wd width.

Yeah, before I did the swap I measured them both. I just swaped the third member only. I was able to drill new holes in the 85 flange to fit my 89 driveline(temp. solution only!) until I have the time and money to rebuild the orignial 89 third with lockers.
