Heater fan doesnt work on lowest setting.

It works on all the other settings but not the lowest one. What controls this and how do I fix it? thanks

my fan doesn't blow hardly any on the first notch either. not sure what causes that but it's annoying always having to use the 2nd higher fan speed...

On most vehicles, there's a little resistor pack that controls that. They wear out over time. I had to replace it in my Impala, was very easy, dealer only item, but reasonably cheap.

I've seen several threads on the blower motor ... which reminds me, I need to tinker around with mine.

Here's a writeup...

Fixed mine with a soldering iron...

Pull out the blower motor resistor from the passenger kick. There is a quick connect wire plug on it (I think 3 or 4 wires). It wasn't too hard to get to and I think I left the blower motor installed, perhaps not (its just 3 screws anyway and since you are in there, you might as well run your plastic blower fan through the dishwasher to clean it). Once you get the resistor pack out you'll see some open metal single strand wires wrapped in to coils. One of the coil sets is likely burned out/broken (This is speed 1 which requires the most resistance and thus gets the hottest causing it to burn through over time with corrosin buildup etc. I just unbent the better part of the wire and soldered it to the shorter broken one. Doing so reduces the resistance some by unwrapping a coil length to make the connection and causes the motor to spin slightly faster then stock on setting one, but still slower than setting 2.

Slap it all back together and presto.

*Note: I originally purcahsed a replacement part form Toyota to do this and I got a 3 speed part, not a 4 speed so it still didn't work on setting 1 until I fixed the old one myself.

I stopped by my dealer today and the parts guy gave me a few part nos...

88635-89103 (resistor, cooler)
87138-89103 (resistor, blower)

Which one of these is the 4-speed one (my truck has off, 3 spds, and full, that makes 4 spd, right?). Its about a $10 difference between the two so I dont want to waste money to get a 3spd.

btw, i removed the resistor that was in my truck (not the original), and the wiring going to it had 4 pins, but the resistor only had 3. is this a 3spd unit that i currently have in there now?
