It could be a blown head gasket (part of the "head job") or it could be worn rings - do a leak down test. I think 50 thou is a pretty big cut in the head - was it badly warped?

It's probably a bad valve guide seal or two. I bought a rebuilt cylinder head from cylinder heads international and it ended up having bad valve seals, so I had to do two head jobs because of someone elses stupid mistake and because they don't check their cylinder heads for errors before they are shipped out.

Does it only smoke on startup?

A compression test measures pressure in the cylinder and a leak down test measures pressure loss. Here's a good article on what exactly a leak down test is. http://autos.yahoo.com/maintain/repa...ques057_1.html

Synthetic oil will cause a disaster in older motors with older seals. I tryed using synthetic in one of my higher mileage vehicles and had oil leaks from everywhere. Some people say to run synthetic in the motor for 3k miles twice a year, then switch back to regular 10w-40 or whatever you use but it is great stuff and definitley lubricates those tight places in motors.

They sell oil additives that help restore rings but there's really no fixing worn rings unless the motor is rebuilt but I'm thinking it's probably related to the cylinder head.

Then you have a blown head gasket. Take the cylinder head off, get it tested for warps and valve problems, buy a cylinder head gasket set if the cylinder tests OK and go to town. Older Toyota 4x4s are definitley worth spending the money to fix. They are badass trucks and have cheap parts that are readily available. If you are a DIY mechanic like me and enjoy going offroad, then owning an older/less expensive model yota is the best way to go.

Take if off-road and enjoy it but expect stuff to break. Fixing stuff should be part of the fun

Do you see smoke or only smell it? It's hard to tell where it's coming from or what's causing it without knowing that. It could be the rings but I don't think so.

I had that happen to me and it was the cylinder head.

Does it only smoke on start-up, then clear out as you start to drive around?
