Im taking my head to the machine shop next free chance I get. We got one that does really nice work right near me. At some point im gonna take my block up there too and have it bored cleaned and painted. I don't like that damaged piston in there, and im thinking the rebuild wad really just a timing chain and a valve job. With 280k on the clock a refreshing sounds like a good idea. Plus more hp= more fun in the mud

Any good shop will check your head and block for cracks before they do any machene work. Tell them about your concerns and they can let you know if you need a new block or head. Bring the timeing cover as well because they'll have to shave the top of it as well to mach the top of the block. Good luck, hope it's just a slightly warped head that let the gasget fail.

oh wow i completely forgot about this thread! well I ended up just taking the engine out and rebuilding it since I had no idea about the history on it and it had 280k miles. block cleaned and bored .20 over, engnbldr rebuild kit, new water and oil pumps, silicone rad hoses, engnbldr street rv head with 268 cam, LCE street header and pro flow exhaust (no cat), and the block got painted a nice royal blue. had a problem with my oil pump seal right away, but got it fixed and so far have about 700 miles on the rebuild

How did you know you had a problem with the oil pump seal? Did you have a leak, or some other symptom? Mine knocks twice (like a dry start) when I start it up cold and then it clears up. I was thinking maybe I have a bad oil pump, or something. Glad to hear you got her in ship shape now.

Yeah, it can get frustrating dealing with the same issue over and over when things don't get better, especially when you have to dig really far in. At least she is good to go now. Thanks for sharing. Take care.
