Head Gasket Question

[FONT
My HG blew about three weeks ago . I `ve been trying to sell her to help the wife with xmas bills but am not getting many responces. only asking 2000. A guy from some used car lot that inquired about my truck told me if I put " Bars Leaks" for radiators into her that it would plug the head gasket leak & I could drive it in an hour if I let it sit with the heater running on high. Has anybody ever heard of this or is this guy pulling my chain.Somebody please help , I`m just a coach & am not mechanically inclined. Thanks Ferg ="Book Antiqua"][/FONT]

why would you want to do that anyways? to try and sell it?

thats unbelievably dishonest if that is what you are trying to do.

where are you located? and what are the specs on your truck. there is a good chance someone might be interested in it on here.

Call Toyota and see if your headgasket is covered by the TSB and if it has been changed before or not. You may get it fixed for free.

I would not do that just to sell her , what I meant is to do it so I could drive it for a while . I absolutely Love my Truck and it is tearing me apart to sell her. Xmas money is not the only reason I am selling her. I have 3 sons in college & the cash flow is small. I cant afford to fix my own truck & I need 3 cars on the road so everybody can get to work.

I've heard a few times that they won't cover it any longer, but again, you never know. Definitely worth a shot. Call one dealership and if they say no, call the next. Might get lucky.

As far as doing the Bars radiator stop leak idea, I'm not sure if that will really work. I've got a leaky radiator and I've tried the Bar's radiator stop leak stuff with no positive results. With a blown gasket, That might end up causing more harm than good if you've got coolant leaking into your cylinders.

Not sure of your mechanical skills, but why not repair it yourself and then sell it if you don't want to keep it.

Don't use bars leak, it will not fix your headgasket problem but will clog up your radiator! If no one wants it here you may want to try eBay. Looks like a nice rig from the pic.

fergie, i have the same identical truck as you (mines 4wd i dont know if yours is or not) and i love it and i have the same problem. i cant offer any advice on your problem but i do feel your pain. good luck with it. ask some of your friends or coworkers if they know a reputable toyota mechanic. since it is christmas he might do side work (so he can earn some xmas cash) for a fraction of the cost of what the stealership might charge. that is how i found my mechanic. i always tip an extra twenty dollars or so because he has helped me immensly. i have a guy lined up to do mine who is a veteran yota mechanic all i have to do is come up with the cash. if i didnt live in a different time zone i would recomend him to you. i said i had no advise but i guess i did after all! good luck and happy holidays!

Daveo, Thanks for the advice. My brother works at a Ford Dealership and he should be able to get me help somehow. I`m torn between a rebuild or engine swap.where are you from? Mine is a 4x4 too.It is in imaculate condition. No rust anywhere to speak of.A week before my HG blew I had it at a TOYTOY dealership for a new starter & steering relay linkage rod (recall). It`s always gonna be in my mind that they forgot to tighten something to cause my misery. Of course they denied that! You have a great Holiday also & God Bless You & Yours.
Fergie
