Head gasket

I own 95 4 Runner.117K mi. good,clean, rust free vehicle from CA.
Head gasket failure, engine running, not overheated. Trying to figure my current options.Im not
mechanical. Have friend mechanic who needs $800,+parts and machine work
estimated $700.Only other known issue is CV for which I have replacement.
Truck in VT, there is at least one 3.4 for sale in the area, asking $700,not in a vehicle though, so how would one know if it is good?
personally not attached to this truck.
Thoughts welcomed.
Thanks
M

I wouldn't put any money in a 3.0 that's just me though. A 3.4 swap can be done cheap, if you do the work and get good deals on parts.
Is your 4Runner 2wd or 4wd? Auto or manual?

Then just let it go, and buy a truck you know works. Replacing a head gasket is uncertain; you never know what parts you are going to need (or what machining work has to be done) until you get in there.

Replacing an engine is a relatively big deal. Even if you successfully put in a NEW engine, the rest of the truck is still 20 years old.

I AM attached to my truck, and I enjoy wrenching on it. I appreciate the intellectual challenge. If that's not you, consider looking elsewhere for your challenges.

I agree with scope103, If you arent attached let it go. My hg went last december after i spent three months and 7g's reconditioning the whole truck including new engine components.
I ended up putting in another 3.0 because time and money was tight. Would have loved to swap in a 3.4, if only it blew in the summer I could have rode my motorcycle around!

I just got done totally rebuilding my 92 4runner 3vze engine. I love my 4runner and would like to keep it another 10 years. I had it bored and heads redone and my total price was about 2 grand. To me it was still was allot cheaper than buying another 4wd.
