Downey sells a kit for under $200. Making your own you are going to waste that much in time reinventing the wheel.

Search "bikini tops" and you'll find some threads.

Way harder than it sounds!! Buying one is really the way to go unless you have lots of experiance with this type of stuff.

I was gonna say you have a beautiful 4Runner...until I saw all that mud.

I got a channel now, just no bikini top...trying to figure out what pre-made stuff the channel is.

Isnt it a fj40 bikini top w/ a jeep windjamer? and then a little frame that prevents flapping?

You can do the same thing w/FJ or CJ8 bikini top from Bestop and their universal front mount (bent to fit 4Runner contour) for under $90. I fabbed the rollbar mounted support loop from plastic elec conduit pieces I had lying around (maybe $5 if you had to buy them).

lofregjeff, what did you do with your rear interior? From the pictures it looks like you deleted the rear carpet but kept the seatback pieces. Deleted panels too, but I have speakers so I need to leave those. Could you take some closeup pics of that general area? Thanks!

No prob! I'll take pics tonite.

I just cut away the plastic of the interrior from the seats back. I use that space for storage of things like my tow ropes, folding shovel, extra fluids, first aid kits, cans of Fix-A-Flat slime.....etc

As for the carpet, I just cut it right below the seats so I can just jump into the back seat and hose out the bed.

I'll have pics up first thing in the moring!

I bought a bikini top for a fj40 from TPI, a landcruiser supplier. The top was $45 with footman loops. I bent a piece of conduit, painted it black and cut a 2x6 to the contour of the roof and drilled the holes and used a router to cut a groove for the wand that's sewn in the top to slide in, that's what holds the top to the cab. A velcro strap holds the conduit in place. The only mod to the top was the straps, I had them shortened about 10" because they were too long. Grand total $56.

Your truck has inspired to go back to a "nice" paintjob whenever I get fiberglass fenders all around. There's a site that sells the 4Runner decal kits. It's just too cool to have a clean 1st gen like yours to be proud of than my rattle can olive drab....sorry, Iknow that's off topic, but I had to say it.

For a cheap and temporally solution (but not esthetic), you could use "blue plastics covers", sell in many department stores

Thanks Marty!!! - I love my truck!! I'm only the 2nd owner too. I've had it for a year and a half. I picked it up from an older couple out here in Arizona. This truck has Always been in AZ so it is totally rust free - But the paint is pretty faded on the roof and a bit on the hood. The guy I got it from said he didn't know how to use the 4wheel drive and never really had a reason to so they never did. So, I got a babied 89 Runner with 170K miles on it for next to nothing - and now look at it!
