Quick question guys.

Buddy has a 86 4runner 22re SR5 4x4 5 speed that we just put a newer head on due to the previous head being cracked.

So we went through everything on the topend, new head gasket, head bolts, etc..

Got everything back together and it was running great after all the initial timing, check for leaks etc..

Now a few days later his PS Pressure hose glows red hot, bursts and engine dies.

Find out that the block lost its chassis ground while he was driving and used the PS hose as one. Shortly after this, we replaced the negative cable from Batt-fender, Positive cable from Batt-F.L.starter.

Now its running great with no issues at all, until yesterday. He drives it to work and it sits for about 30 min. He goes back out to start it and nothing. Starter relay clicks but nothing.

So I immediately assume solenoid issue or other starter issue. However, upon further diagnosis, I figured out that the engine has lost a ground again.

I found this out while testing for power at starter and trying to use a jumper wire.

Now it will crank, but very very slow and acts like the battery is dead. I take a jumper cable, clamp it to the negative terminal, and the other end to the block on one of the intake bolts. Immediately it cranks at full speed and starts. Let go of jumper and it stays running but volt meter seems a little low.

I guess my question is, what am i missing as far as a grounds go. Here is a list things that have recently been replaced and checked.

Reman alt

Neg and Pos Cables

ground cable from left side of block to fender

Ground is hooked up on right side of block under distributor on the P.S. Bracket.

New Battery

Replaced starter with a good one that I had.

Checked all fuses and wiring in Engine Bay

We are also using my 85 4runner 22re as a reference for wiring


Any Ideas... Should I try to test resistance on all grounds. Am I forgetting a ground somewhere else that is tripping me up.

Thanks guys I appreciate it. This was exactly what I was looking for but couldnt find. I guess I forgot to mention that the ground on back of the cyl head and on the intake were there.

Ill swap the ground from the neg terminal to the block rather than to the fender.

I just had it there because thats how my 85 is setup

Hi, Mark.

You should still have a ground wire from Batt neg to right-side fender, unless there is another connection from batt neg to body. Pic below from my 86 4Runner dlx.



Also recommend you clean connectors to bare metal so you have direct metal on metal contact, and not rely on coated (possibly be oxidized) screws. Apply conductive grease on contact surfaces to prevent further oxidation.
