I've been wanting to put a diesel engine in my 86 4runner for a while and I've found a few om617s but they need major rebuild work. So today I was on LCE earlier and saw some supercharger kits, but the 22r kits are about $3k and the 22re kits are almost 4k. I've crunched the numbers and I think either the om617 swap or the supercharger install will come out to about the same amount of ca$h. So what would you guys do? Convert to 22r and buy the cheaper supercharger kit, buy the 22re kit, or or completely scrap the yota motor and become diesel powered?

Basically, by power standards, the Mercedes is the way to go on power/parts availability, mechanic support, and engine simplicity in the states, unless you really want the newest, best and brightest computer controlled Toyota diesels with all the according conversion issues, or figuring out on your own how to make a Toyota 3L or 5L engine fit. I personally don't have the capability or time to do a complete install on my own.

Unless gas gets really expensive, I'm likely going to go the 3.4L 5vzfe route as it's relatively super cheap and simple install relative to diesel. Diesel Toys no longer has pricing listed, but a Toyota 1KZ-TE diesel swap by them was nearly $20k ($12,500 in parts and $8k in labor for auto and $9k in labor for manual). I can go with a 3.4L swap, new tranny, and transfer case for ~$6k. If having/going with a manual transmission -- the swap runs just $3500 ($2k labor, $1.5k parts) through Toyota Only Swaps.

If you're running a 22re right now, you might want to consider a 2.4L (142 hp, 160 lb-ft torque) 2rzfe swap or the 2.7L (150 hp, 177 lb-ft torque) 3rzfe swap. The latter gets you to 3vze power specs, and I think that engine mounts, trannies and whatnot allow for a fairly direct swap.
