Gen 2 Loud exhaust tick? Maybe leaking exhaust manifold?

I have a 1993 4runner with the 3.slow in it. It has 240,xxx miles on it, and I’m slowly rebuilding it. Ever since I bought it, it had this loud tick on the passenger side of the block. My thought was that it was a very loud exhaust lead, and could be fixed. Is there maybe an underlying issue?

I have the same tick coming from the driver side after doing my head gaskets. I got my heads hot tanked and surfaced, no valve work. In my case I think its my valves in cylinder 6 because thats where my warpage was. I also did not adjust my valves or check my clearances.

that’s definitely one thing I need to go over. I don’t gave Head gasket issues, but I also haven’t check my valve clearance. There’s is a little bit of valve chatter, but valve chatter isn’t like the loud tick

Exhaust leaks are very easy to find with your hand, just try not to flinch into anything moving when you find it...

Internal noises are best localized with a stethoscope. It will tell you where but you have to take things apart to find the why.

Loose fitting exhaust (nuts not replaced when removed, they are one time use) causes exhaust gaskets to fail, failed gaskets cause localized hot spots, hot spots warp things, warped things are bad!
