Also if you are the type that runs a tire until it is almost bald, a 33" mud tire will shrink to under 32" when bald.

Measure with no weight on the tire, maybe the spare would be easiest.
The only time in 45,000 miles of daily driving with 5.71s I felt like I was geared too low was near the end of the life span of my 33" tires and I was driving across New Mexico on I-40 and the speed limit was 80mph IIRC and there was a strong tailwind so the traffic flow including big-rigs was going about 90 mph. I was holding back at 80-85 mph because I don't like to run the tach over 4000 rpms.

you can always take a look at this: http://intercotire.com/site63.php The general rule that i've seen here though is guys with automatics go up one more ratio when dealing with a automatic

flip thru some of these threads and find out who's running 33's with a v6 auto, what gears they're running and send them a PM and ask them how they like the gear ratio that they're running with the tires

I'am not saying I don't believe you guys but I just thought it was a little steep. Heck I may just change over to a manual transmission but that is the last resort. I just want a gear that is very close to the stock ratio with the stock tires, thats all. I really don't need any steep gears cause that is what 4 low is for. I have been looking in people's sig to see what they are running for gear but most leave that out of their sig!

It also doesn't take into account the lack of power with the 3.0. If you stick in a 3.4 or 4.0 or V8 engine the chart would work fine.

So, mtgoat, how is life with the 5.29's? Does your truck bog down alot like you were talking about earlier? I'm just a little scared by the 5.71's especially if my tire is true 32 1/4". I'm afraid it will be revving too hard for my liking. How would the 5.71's affect take off? Also, how does gas mileage play into this. I mean if I am at higher rpm's I am burning more gas right?

I'm not happy with the 5.29/33" tire combo with this engine and the auto tranny. It is very close to stock (my speedo is very accurate now) but I wasn't happy with the stock set-up either. I'm often running in 3rd gear into the wind or up little hills (and the hills are pretty small here in OK) because I can't hold my speed in OD. I hate the way my shift point between 3rd and OD is right at 65-70 mph. So right at the main cruising speed (70 mph) for most of the interstates and highways around here I'm either running at 4000rpms in 3rd or bogging down in OD. To get this engine up to it's sweet spot in the powerband in OD I would need to be going over 80-85mph, hell if the engine had the power to pull it, this thing would probably do 110-120mph with this gearing before it red-lined.
As far as the gas mileage, I've not seen any difference in mileage beween the 4.88/31" tire set-up or the 5.71/33" tire set-up or the 5.29/33" tire set-up. And I do calculate and record my mileage at every fill-up and have since the truck was brand new in 1993.
Soon I am starting my 3.4 swap and I will also be adding a SC and URD's fuel kit so I'm sure that set-up will spin the 33's quite nicely.

YES! That one is about right!!! BTW when I plug in 5.29/33" @ 120mph it shows 4524 rpms for OD, and my truck redlines @5750rpms. I could go to 150 mph before redlining with my gearing.
Also when I plug in 5.71/32" @ 60mph it shows 2518 rpms for OD, right smack in the middle of what's recommened for a 6 cyl engine! Did you ever measure your tire height?
