GEAR QUESTION, I don't no what I have!!

Well here we go. I have a 95 4x4 4runner, and I'm not sure what gears I'm running. I'm running 31" tires on it now, but thinking of moving up to 33" but I want to make sure I can do this with the stock gears. Does anyone no the type I' running?

There are a few places that you can look it up if you know the axle code. A quick search on here should find one.
Or for a definite answer just jack up one tire, spin it 2 times and count the # of times the drive shaft turns. About 3 and 3/4 is 3.73, slightly under 4 is 3.9 something, slightly over 4 is 4.1, about 4 and a half is 4.56, etc. If you want to be more accurate turn the tire 20 times and divide the driveshaft turns by 10.

You eithere have 4.56 or 4.88. There are a few other possible but NOT very likely. If you are a v6 5speed and STOCK 31" tires you have 4.56, if you have the auto you have 4.88. If by somehow you have a V6 and 235/75 tire options, which is EXTREMELY rare by '95 you coud have 4.30

OR look at the door jam id plate. There is a 4 digit code for the axle. First will tell you the size, second and third is gear ratio and fourth is number of pinons. The first and last numbers ONLY apply to rear axles regardless of 4x4 or not.

I'll get back to this with the updated codes for a locking rear diff....

Also brain894x4 needs to re-check his codes, they are slightly off.

Hey, bear80, that info is awesome. I saw something like this on the net sometime ago, but no where near as detailed as this. I think this info needs to be stickied or in the mod section or something. Great post!! :bigclap: :bigclap:
