don't know if its needed but on the timing cover I've used a gasket with toyota black FIPG sealer. You can buy it at the dealership for like 15 bucks and you want the black one since it's specifically for oil. (I think the other color is for transmission fluid) I used this on two timing cover jobs with less-than-stellar surfaces (i.e. I didn't clean off the old gasket too well...) with no leak at all either time, first try. That stuff is amazing.

Someone else will chime in on the head gasket but according to the FSM (for a 22re) you use a tiny bit of FIPG where the timing cover meets the block and nowhere else.

I put Black RTV on the corners to hold the gaskets in place, and I had no problems. Who manufactured the timing kit? I ask this because, you get what you pay for.

I replaced the timing chain leaving the head on and greased up the head gasket with RTV, so it slid in place.
