Posting for a buddy. He has a 91 pickup. He replaced his gas pump on the weekend and when he went to open the drain plug on his gas tank, it was fubard. From his description the plug turns, but the threads are ed. He wasn't able to remove the plug or retighten and it it's leaking some gas.

So I was thinking about just trying to weld the plug shut w/ my 220v stick welder.

Anyone have any idea ho I would go about this w/out blowing myself up?

Maybe not worth it. Anyone know if another gas tank would fit in from something other then a 3rd gen pickup?

I can get tanks around here for $100 (used) for almost any vehicle. It is not worth blowing yourself up!

The epoxy tank repair stuff works pretty well.

 

Be sure to top the tank off before you weld it. Bigger explosion that way.

 

When I was in africa I saw a guy welding a hole in a desel tanker truck, just welding right on the side of the tank and it was one of those huge tankers that delivers gas to gas stations.... it was crazy!!

 

DO NOT WELD A GAS TANK UNLESS ITS BEEN GAS FREED, and certified gas freed.

best bet would be some of that epoxy liner for the tank.

oh, and diesel is different, although i still wouldn't weld a diesel tank there are a number of stories about lit cigarettes being put out in diesel tanks.

 

Or you could try and remove it and retap that bolt with a larger one and use a gasket around it.

 

That will happen with gas too - the liquid isn't flammable, only the vapor. As such, the recommendation to fill the tank above actually DOES increase the safety because it displaces the vapor with liquid.

 

I usually remove them, drain, and take them the car wash and blast them out good after removing the sender/fuel pump assembly. Then sit them out in the sun for a few hours until thay dry up before welding.
In a pinch I would recommend that Magnum gas tank repair putty, I have used it before and it works great,...until it could be properly repaired that is
