Gah! Problem re-installing rear Axle Shafts
Hi guys
I've finally installed the new bearings and seals on the rear axle shafts from my 1990 truck. (had to get a Dealer to press out/in the bearings)
Now I'm re-installing the axles in the axle housing....
The backing plate is all the way against the axle housing flange but something must be wrong.
When I rotate the axles there's a metal-scrubbing noise (at the hub end) and the main driveshaft won't turn (via the LSD diff).
With the axle removed it rotates smoothly, so the bearings are ok.
Before I installed the axles, I can see the diff's splined output shaft inside the housing, so how did I get these mis-aligned? even though the backing plate is sitting against the housing?
Cheers

Well I thought about just deleting this thread, but maybe we can turn this into a "most silly mistake" thread...
By mistake, I tried to put the rear axle shafts from a solid-axle-front vehicle into my I.F.S vehicle which has longer, rear axle shafts.
I had bought new axles/brake assemblies because my old drum brake assemblies were in bad condition.
I took the axle/brake assemblies to a Dealership to get them to press in new bearings but I didn't notice that my original axle shafts are a lot longer!
Back to the Dealer I go... hopefully they can re-use these new bearings?
