how do you positively identify a transmission? It is in a 1990 2wd. the tag on the door jamb says g57, but i can't be sure of this because of the retarded nature of the previous owner, who ran for 10k with a hung open thermostat.

There's nothing that will "tell" you what transmission it is. I'm mean it isn't likely to be stamped g57 or w57. However, I found some info that leads me to think it's a g57. Specifically, the w57 isn't a truck transmission. It's a car trans found in Toyota Cressida, Crown, and the Supra MK 2 up to 1986, not used after that appearently. The g57 is listed as a common 2wd truck transmission found behind the 22r(e) engine.
