funky name for grease
im preparing to replace my cv's and i noticed it calls for molibdenum disulphide lithium base grease. is this necessary? cant i just use a regular lithium grease? or does it have to be the special toyota stuff?
some pointers would be greatly appreciated!

Molybdenum disulphide is commonly referred to as "moly" grease or lube, available at just about any auto parts store. Its really thick and sticky and does really well under pressure. In fall/winter/spring, you could take a yogurt container of moly, press it to the roof and it would probably still be there in the shape of the yogurt container in the morning!

(Graphic content follows. Parental discresion is advised... or at least some good degreaser....)
CV joint grease makes peanut butter melted into carpet look thin. Ever have one of those toilet visits where you keep wiping, and wiping, and wiping... and there's still something to clean up- the more you clean, the more you wipe? CV grease is worse than that. I heard a comparison once about trying to clean peanut butter from shag carpet with kleenex tissue. Does that help?
Do not go cheap. Get what is recommended.

Molle-B is some good stuff. I was a CH-53E airframer in the Marines and we used the stuff on our helos. It is ungodly messy, but its worth the clean-up.

I don't think it was that messy, but I squeezed the tube of CV grease that came with the boots directly into the boots.
Just checking that you mean on the splined outer end of the CV shaft as opposed to inside the boots- you said you were replacing them instead of repairing them. I do believe moly is specified for use on the splines as well.

Are you replacing just the boots or the whole Cv's?
The boot kit from Toyota has one type of grease for the inside boot and another for the outside boot.
OEM boot kit is very nice.

Triple checked. That simply is the Canadian price, and they usually reflect the American prices, but perhaps this price doesn't.

Just so youins know, the molybdenum is an extreme pressure (EP) additive that is necessary in such applications, I wouldn't skimp on it. The CV joints operate under a lot of pressure and need the added lubricity.
