function of 'gas filter'??

put on new vacuum lines on my 94 22re, and was curious of the function of the 'gas filter' on the plenum? I traced this line back through the vsv, and it ends up at the fuel pressure valve. Is it to prevent raw gas out of the vacuum system in case the fpv goes south? Or is it's function less glamorous?

It's just to keep debris from getting sucked into the plenum. It has three ports to "supply" vacuum to various components (PAIR, ADD, EGR, and Fuel Pressure Up), and any one of them could have a line pull off and suck whatever is floating around the engine compartment into the engine.
