Fuelpump question.

Could a bad fuel pump cause my truck to:
- quit for hours, only to start up again and run fine for no apparent reason
- Cause the engine idle to bump intermittenly every few seconds?
- Cause the check engine light to come on with the codes 14 (Loss of referencew signal - to what i do not know, and 25 (lean exhaust)?
- Cause engine to turn over faster when starter is engaged (because there is no fuel to compress?)

My truck has now left me stranded twice! I dont know why the engine quits like it does. My mechanic told me it could be a bad Cat converter, ignitor, fuel pump, or distributor.

Im trying to narrow these down to the most probable one because Im running out of money to throw at this truck!!

Please advise!

Yeah looked at it. There are a few similarities, but his at least continued to run. When mine quits forget it, might as well walk home and come back tomorrow. Now I doubt a Cat could knock it out like this, or an O2 sensor. I have a new distributor, however the coil and fuel pump are factory.

One other thing, the other night I looked under the hood and saw one of my spark plug wires arcing off the block. I havent had a chance to change the wire yet, could this cause these problems?

certainly could have similar symptoms. if it's arching, you should toss on a set of wires anyway. when was the last time it got plugs, wires, etc?

I put these plug wires on it about 2 mos ago. Damn defects! I dont know if the auto parts store will give me a new set either as I do not have the original packaging, nor the reciept. Do you think an arching wire can lead to coil failure?

For the most part. Although at one point it was so bad that it would die under any load whatsoever (and barely even idle). Then, like your truck is behaving randomly, mine also randomly decided to run.

You seem to be in a worse place than I am though. I wish I could be of some help. If I have any luck with mine I'll let you know.

I do remember though that once my grandpa had a 19 foot bayliner that acted similiairly. It would run fine and then die and stall out really badly, and then run fine again. It turned out there was junk in the fuel tank that collected around the pump for a while, and when the boat was stopped, fell away again. Doesn't seem to be quite the same thing though.

With any luck we'll both solve our problems!

Cool

Check the distributor, then check the fuel pump, lastly check fuel pressure @ idle with/with out the FPR hooked to vacuum & check fuel pressure 5 min after shutting the engine off. Most Toyota engine's should maintain 21psi of fuel pressure.

Found part of the problem. It looks like either my coil or ignitor (or both) is dying. I cranked on her this morning and she was dead in the water. Tesed for spark and got nothing. Pulled plugs off coil and ignitor, cleaned them, re attached distributor wire plug and she fired right up.Purred like a kitten. Ive driven her since and I am already starting to notice the system breaking down again. Coil packs are like $200!!!!

Ebay here I come!
