Hi there, Im driving a 1993 pickup with the V6 3.0L. I chewed up both the fill plugs on my front and rear differential and want to get some new ones before I take the cold chisel to them. Does anyone know where I can get them? Not having a lot of luck searching. They have a 24mm hex head. I'm thinking of also changing the oil on my transfer case. Does it take the same size plug? It seemed like the rear diff and transmission plugs were the same size, leading me to think that the fill and drain plugs are all the same size on the truck.

Also, I saw a YouTube video saying that you could replace the hex head plug with an Allen wrench head using this part:

The plugs (thank the Lord!) for the front diff, rear diff, transfer case, atm drain ... are all the same. 90341-18049. Less than $5 at an online dealer https://parts.lakelandtoyota.com/p/T...034118049.html so I couldn't see the justification for scrounging junkyards or what-not.

If you have to remove the old ones with a chisel, you might end up with damaged threads. It would be wise to "chase" the threads with the correct sized tap. The size will be metric, I don't know what it is, but when you get your new plugs you can take them down to the hardware store and match them. They will be straight (not tapered) threads, and any of the three kinds of tap (taper, plug, bottom) will work. Be sure to tell US what size thread it is.

On my "new" (2007) car, the drain plugs don't use hex keys, but 10mm square keys. Which means a 3/8" ratchet will (sorta) fit to remove them. Should you switch to a hex-key type? You have a 24mm hex head, and you completely destroyed it trying (unsuccessfully, so far) to remove it. How well do you think an 8mm hex key would fare?

Might consider these. They are low profile and use 10mm allen drive. Magnetic chaff catcher too.

All I can say you must have A Super Hardware Store to find a Tap that size.

Thanks for the links guys. Point taken about the Allen wrench vs the hex head. I think I will stick with the old style plugs. I think I might get them from a different site though. $10 shipping for $10 in parts is painful.
