I have been working on replacing the front and rear parking brake cables on an 87 Pickup I recently bought. So far the work has gone smoothly and the only thing left to do is attach the front cable and adjust. Can anyone provide advice on how to re-install the spring clip where the front cable threads through the bracket that mounts to the firewall? There are 2 grooves on the end of the cable where it looks like the clip should fit as the cable comes into the bracket. However, the grooves do not push through the bracket where the slit is for the clip to attach to the cable. Both the cable and bracket are Toyota parts (not aftermarket), so I am not sure why they don't seem to mate. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

 

You need to put the pin through the nylon wheel before attaching the cable to the lever .

It is impossible to do it other wise at least by yourself

Thanks for the suggestion. I did have the pin installed through the nylon wheel and couldn't get the clip on. I compared the cable I bought from Village Toyota Parts with the old one (original?) I took off the truck and they are slightly different. The old cable pushes up through the bracket a little further, allowing the clip to attach. I can't imagine Village Toyota sent me the wrong part, because they double check everything against the VIN. I am wondering if Toyota is not manufacturing the part to spec? Has anyone else experienced that with this part or any other? I am not sure what to do. I may try the local hardware store and see if I can find a clip that will attach. Thanks again for the reply, I really appreciate it. Any other ideas are welcome.

 

was the cable off the wheel keeping the pin from going all the way through

your talking about the flat clip that holds it in the bracket .

You attach that before hooking it up to the lever under the truck.

As long as the difference is not much remember the old cable has stretched.

The new one will be shorter because it is new!!+

 

It isn't the actual cable I am talking about, rather the housing where the cable comes out at the far end. I know what you mean about the old cable being stretched. However, the metal housing (for lack of a better word) is different on the old cable - it's slightly longer which allows it to poke further up into the bracket where the clip attaches.
I filed a couple of grooves in the end and attached the clip. It isn't perfect but I think it will work. Thanks again
