90 4 Runner SAS

Went and looked at one for my buddy buying it from another friend. and has the SAS the 3.0 motor, everything was checking out except when put into 4 wheel low. Went in fine but when the front was locked in it would make a loud click / pop every now and then.

I'm pretty sure its not the transfer case as it only made the noise when the front hubs were locked in. It was also random and sounded like as best I can tell coming from the front pumpkin.

I don't think it was the front differential as I've had those go out on me and it was a different kind of noise that was "predictable" as it rolled through the gears?
Our friend selling it wasn't sure but thought it was most likely the locker. He "thinks" it's a detroit.

Never had or messed with a SAS so not sure if something else I need to look at?

The fact that it pops once in a while is not enough to say that it is failing.

Detroits and other lockers are known to make noise when locking and unlocking.

Maybe it is worn, or failing, who knows what abuse it has suffered??

You have'nt seen anything to prove it yet.

Yeah just wondering, this is definitely outside of the regular locker clicks and pops.

If he ends up getting it just going to have to open it up and take a look.
