I have been chasing this rattle on my 95'runner for a bit now..
I have read a couple of things here but need some feedback.
When I am driving, any bumps I hit with front wheels causes a rattle. Is the spindle bearings a common problem for IFS ?

I have had CVs replaced and still happens. It's been prevelent for a year now:pat: ...should be lookin worn (whatever it is) when I get to it!

Check your anti-rattle springs that go on top of your brake pads. That is a all too common rattle in older toyotas! They get old and break and fall out! Just a starting point!

 

I had that on my '88. It turned out to be worn front suspension parts, like the upper ball joints, tie rod ends, and the idler arm. My tire wear had gotten bad and steering was pretty sloppy. You might look there. I'm not sure how you'd check those parts. After I had them replaced the rattles were gone and the truck drove much better.

 

It's more than likely your inner spindle bushings. They are brass bushings that are prone to wear out. I have the same problem. Get under your truck, grab the cv shaft and try to move it. If it has play going into the spindle, you need new bushings.

Thanks for the response all. I figured this was the problem but wanted to get some feedback anyhow. This should be a fun job not having a garage to work in... I figure if I am going to tear it apart I will wait till I get the manual hubs and upper ball joint spacers in ( 1 inch lift) as well as adding the 2inch heavy duty coils in the rear. Might as well do it all at once so to speak. I will give myself a week to be realistic.
But none of this will take place for a few weeks yet so I will endure the rattle for now.

also check your front links, often the small washer wears out & the link bounces arounf & off the lower control arm creating the rattling noise - at least that is it on mine.

 

Hey guys I've worked on a few of these trucks and never gave a thought to these bushings. All had manual hubs with minimal 4wd use (I could see the a set with ADD wearing out), and the question came up on how tight a new set of these bushing should be around the outer birfield shaft and I could not answer because all the ones I've seen have been lose, and this person's was more than fairly snug.

 

Not sure if this has been solved but my '90 makes a nice rattle on small to even large bumps......

It is caused by the shocks. It has missing and/or bad lower bushings and the metal eye of the shocks smacks the bolts and mount for the shock. It's very annoying but my truck is a pile anyway.

 

That's what I was going to suggest. I've had worn spindle bushings, but I have also had worn lower shock bushings.
Both problems make a lot of noise.

 

when my shock bolt was loose it rattled.

 

My 95 has rattled a little since it was brand new. I always just figured it was the brake pads and ignored it.

Now at 205k it's still fine, and still slightly rattling.
